IFTA or International Fuel Tax Agreement is an agreement related to reporting of fuel used by the motor carriers if operating between multiple jurisdictions. The agreement is in 48 lower states of United States and the 10 Canadian provinces. After completing your driver training and earning your CDL, you’ll need an IFTA to operate in more than one jurisdiction. A vehicle will qualify if it fulfils the following requirements: 1.        2 axles and GVW more than 26,000 pounds 2.       2 axles and a registered weight more than 26,000 pounds 3.       A combination weight more than 26,000 pounds 4.      3 or more axles regardless of weight How does it work? IFTA carriers need to register with the International Registration Plan (IRP) in order to compliant with IFTA. IFTA decals will be provided to all the trucks whose validity expires annually. This must be displayed all the times if don’t want to get fined. The carriers need to report the fuel usage only to the base state.
