All you need to know about IFTA

IFTA or International Fuel Tax Agreement is an agreement related to reporting of fuel used by the motor carriers if operating between multiple jurisdictions. The agreement is in 48 lower states of United States and the 10 Canadian provinces. After completing your driver training and earning your CDL, you’ll need an IFTA to operate in more than one jurisdiction.

A vehicle will qualify if it fulfils the following requirements:

1.       2 axles and GVW more than 26,000 pounds

2.      2 axles and a registered weight more than 26,000 pounds

3.      A combination weight more than 26,000 pounds

4.     3 or more axles regardless of weight

How does it work?

IFTA carriers need to register with the International Registration Plan (IRP) in order to compliant with IFTA. IFTA decals will be provided to all the trucks whose validity expires annually. This must be displayed all the times if don’t want to get fined. The carriers need to report the fuel usage only to the base state. The base state will be responsible for the followings:

·        To process the quarterly IFTA tax return of carrier.

·        Distributing or receiving the quantity of fuel use tax the carrier owes

·        Auditing carrier

How to complete IFTA reporting?

IFTA reporting is very essential for compliance and cost reduction. To complete IFTA reporting, carrier must do these things:

·        Submit an application to primary jurisdiction which includes registered business name, email address, federal business number, USDOT number.

·        On approval of application, you’ll receive decals which are necessary to be displayed.

·        Record driven miles, fuel purchased and fuel tax paid in each jurisdiction.

·        Quarterly IFTA record submit to base jurisdiction then base jurisdiction will process reports and payments from other states.

·        Fleet managers must allow DOT to access reports anytime.
