All you need to know about IFTA
IFTA or International Fuel Tax Agreement is an agreement related to reporting of fuel used by the motor carriers if operating between multiple jurisdictions. The agreement is in 48 lower states of United States and the 10 Canadian provinces. After completing your driver training and earning your CDL, you’ll need an IFTA to operate in more than one jurisdiction.
A
vehicle will qualify if it fulfils the following requirements:

axles and GVW more than 26,000 pounds
2.

axles and a registered weight more than 26,000 pounds
3.
A
combination weight more than 26,000 pounds
4.
3
or more axles regardless of weight
How
does it work?
IFTA
carriers need to register with the International Registration Plan (IRP) in
order to compliant with IFTA. IFTA decals will be provided to all the trucks
whose validity expires annually. This must be displayed all the times if don’t
want to get fined. The carriers need to report the fuel usage only to the base
state. The base state will be responsible for the followings:

process the quarterly IFTA tax return of carrier.

Distributing
or receiving the quantity of fuel use tax the carrier owes

How
to complete IFTA reporting?
IFTA
reporting is very essential for compliance and cost reduction. To complete IFTA
reporting, carrier must do these things:

Submit
an application to primary jurisdiction which includes registered business name,
email address, federal business number, USDOT number.
·
On
approval of application, you’ll receive decals which are necessary to be
displayed.
·
Record
driven miles, fuel purchased and fuel tax paid in each jurisdiction.
·
Quarterly
IFTA record submit to base jurisdiction then base jurisdiction will process
reports and payments from other states.
· Fleet managers must allow DOT to access reports anytime.
