The biennial MCS 150 update

In every two years trucking companies need to update the information associated with the number issued by DOT (Department of Transportation). This is done by updating the MCS 150 form. This form provides specific information about your business to the FMCSA department.

What is an MCS 150 form?

MCS 150 provides information to FMCSA, including
·        The number of vehicles in your fleet
·        Your mileage
·        About your designation, whether you are hazardous material or passenger vehicle carrier
The following information can be verified by FMCSA with the help of the DOT number. MCS-150 must be updated biennial according to FMCSA even if none of the business information has changed. You can also update it any time in case you have done any change in your business or added any new truck in your fleet. It is important to provide accurate information while filling the form because FMCSA uses this file to measure your score in the fields of safety, compliance, safety measurement system, and accountability.

What happens if you don’t update your MCS-150?

If you don’t update your MCS-150 form within the required time, your DOT number will be canceled plus you have to pay $1000 per day fine up to $10000. You need to know which year you have to update your DOT number. The DOT number itself tells you which year you have to get it updated. If the second to last digit of DOT number is an odd number, then you have to update your MCS-150 in an odd-numbered calendar year and if it is even then even-numbered calendar year. Whereas the last digit tells about the month on which the updating process of MCS-150 has to be done.
